Swimming Groups Mini Marlins swimming lessons are for 30 minutes and each course is for 10 weeks. Lessons continue during the school holidays but on occasions it may be necessary to cancel due to the club holding a gala at Chorley for one of the 3 team leagues that the club is currently involved with, Micro League, North Lancs League and Speedo League.
All our Mini Marlins groups are taught within the National Plan for Teaching Swimming. Each group will be at a different stage as detailed below.
6.00-6.30 : GOLDFISH: This is the first group in Mini Marlins and their lesson takes place in the small pool, swimmers here may be as young as 4 years old and will be working within Stage 1 and 2 of the National Plan. Briefly this means the swimmers will work towards achieving basic safety awareness, basic movement skills and water confidence, safe entry into the water including jumping in, basic floating, travel and rotation. This group may use swimming aids such as armbands and floats.
6.30-7.00 : STARFISH: The second of our four groups is also taught in the small pool. This group will be working towards Stage 3 and 4 of the National Plan. Swimmers will further develop safe entry including submersion, travel up to 10 meters on their front and back, progress rotation skills and water safety knowledge, develop an understanding of buoyancy, refine kicking technique for all strokes and swim 10 meters to a given standard as determined by the ASA
7.00-7.30 : SEAHORSES: The third group are taught in the large pool but may not use the whole 25 meters dependant on ability and confidence. The swimmers will be working towards Stage 5 and 6 of the National Plan. New skills such as sculling and treading water will be introduced, complete rotation, performing all strokes to a given standard as determined by the ASA, they will also develop effective swimming skills including coordinated breathing, water safety and preparation for exercise.
7.30-8.00 : TURTLES: The final group is also taught in the large pool and will be working towards Stages 6 and 7 of the National Plan. They will develop quality stroke technique upto 100 meters incorporating skills learnt and combining them to develop a linked routine and complete successfully an obstacle course that combines a variety of skills accomplished throughout all 7 stages.
Swimmers will be continually assessed to ensure good progress and the coach will move swimmers up into the next group when they have achieved the required standard. It is a requirement of the club that all swimmers under the age of 8 must have a parent or guardian present at the pool whilst swimming.
Record of Achievements Cards Each swimmer will receive a Record of Achievement card. This is a fun way for children to record the badges and certificates they achieve they can also see what they are aiming for next.
Payment of Fees Fees are paid in blocks of 10 weeks and are due on the first week of each new course. A notice to all swimmers/parents is displayed on the Marlins noticeboard detailing the amount and the dates of the next 10 sessions. Payment by cheque is preferred but cash is accepted (in person). All cheques should be made payable to Chorley Marlins ASC and placed in an envelope clearly addressed as ‘Mini Marlins’ along with the swimmers name it can then be handed to Bronwen or posted in the Marlins postbox on our noticeboard at the Leisure centre. Please do not put cash in the postbox.
Progression to Improver Squad at Chorley Marlins Swimmers who are eligible to join Improvers will be recommended by Mary our headcoach and this movement will be discussed with parents. Improver squad sessions are held at the leisure centre on Sunday evenings 6pm-7pm. Swimmers join the group in lane 1 and as they develop skill, technique and ability they will move up through the lanes. Each lane has its own qualified coach with a maximum of 10 swimmers per lane. Progression through Improvers can take varying amounts of time dependant on the swimmer themselves and some may move through the lanes quicker than others. Should your child wish to progress on to become a Marlins swimmer they must join the club and pay an annual membership fee, in addition to this they are now also required to join the ASA and an annual membership fee is also payable to them via the club. At this stage fees are no longer paid in blocks of 10 weeks or by cheque they are collected by monthly Standing Order. |
