Well Done to all those swimmers who took part in the recent Blackpool lights gala, with a massive haul of 21 trophies, great job all of you. Have a look at the detailed results below:

Sadly an unfortunate clash of dates with the micro-league swim off meant a rather depleted, but very keen team of 13 swimmers travelled over the Pennines to do battle at this year’s Worksop Dolphin’s Open 50m meet in Sheffield. Considering most of the swimmers hadn’t swum in a 50m pool in a year, they fearlessly took to the water to give it their all, swimming close to their Personal Best times, with many achieving new 50m PB times :-
Kate Doughty (100 Breast) Chloe Cottam (50 Fly) Kiera Dunstan (50 Fly) Ceri Ormesher (50 Free, 50 Breast) Jack Wilson (50 Free, 50 Breast, 100 Back) Liam Hardman (50 Fly, 100 Free) Jordon O’Hara (50 Fly, 100 Free, 100 Fly) Jack Hardman (50 Fly) In addition, extra congratulations to some Trophy and Age Group Medal winners :- Lizzie Woodcock (1st 50 Fly, 1st 100 Free, 1st 50 Back, 1st 50 Free, 5th 100 Back) Chloe Cottam (2nd 50 Fly) Jordon O’Hara (2nd 50 Fly, 4th 50 Back, 4th 50 Free) Jack Hardman (3rd 50 Fly, 3rd 100 Free, 6th 50 Back, 2nd 100 Fly, 6th 50 Free, 4th 100 Back) Liam Hardman (6th 50 Fly, 6th 50 Free) Very well done to all those who took part. Hard luck to George Wilson who was very poorly in the afternoon and missed his races. Hope you’ll be on form for the Marlin’s Winter meet, coming soon on 7th/8th November! Marlin’s also entered 8 relay events, every swimmer taking part pulling out excellent swims, a lot of them in the spirit of “not letting the team down” swimming significantly faster than in their individual races. With the shortage of swimmers in attendance, many had to swim twice in a session and also up in an age group, running from one relay to the next with minimal rest! That given, we had some super results with the girls 14/under free team fractionally missing out on 3rd place, just 0.53 seconds behind. Very well done to Kate Doughty, Kiera Dunstan, Chloe Cottam & Lizzie Woodcock. Our mixed Open Medley relay team also finished 4th, an agonising 0.29 seconds from 3rd place! Great work Lizzie Woodcock, Jack Hardman, Jordon O’Hara & Chloe Cottam. A very special mention to Jordon O’Hara, who not only achieved his very first Regional time, managed to bag 3 others! 50 Free, 50 Fly, 100 Free & 100 Fly. Jordon has now qualified to swim at the ASA North West Winter Regionals, taking place in Liverpool on 7/8th November. Good Luck Jordon!! More Marvellous Marlins! The weekend got off to a cracking start on Friday evening, as two courageous Marlins, Abbie Brennand (11) and Jordan O’Hara (13), took to the water of Blackpool’s Palentine Pool, to take on the 400m freestyle. Both swimmers did extremely well, both achieving personal best times. Jordan also secured a SILVER medal to add to his medal wins from Bolton, achieved the week before. A smashing evening’s work. Well done! Great swims continued on Saturday morning, our 11 Marlins gaining some very good new personal best times, 44% rate, quite a tall order as some swimmers were trying to better times, which they’d only just achieved at the Bolton competition. A strong swim, definitely worth a mention, came from Keira Dunstan (12), who took the advice to, “Just go for it!” and she just did! Gaining herself a very nice pb in the 100m freestyle, good focus, Keira. Unfortunately, we had some swimmers forced to withdraw from racing due to illness, poorly Amelia Arcangelo (13), due to race 11 times over the weekend, found herself feeling too unwell to continue, managing to bravely complete her 200IM before retiring. Georgia Ashton (11) also had to withdraw but not before achieving a pb in her 50m backstroke. Hard luck girls, hopefully you’ll be in tip top condition for the Marlins’ Sprint Meet 13th and 14th June! Saturday afternoon produced 67% pbs from our 6 racing Marlins. First up, the boys 200m freestyle and all of our boys did themselves proud, all achieving good personal best times, very good ones from Nathan White (14) and Callan Sharples (13). Liam Hardman (12) found himself in 4th position, agonizingly close to bronze, just 0.46 s off. The agony didn’t stop there as Liam found himself once more in 4th position in his next race, the 100m Backstroke, 0.34s off the bronze! Nathan White also finished 4th in the last boys’ race of the day, the 50m Butterfly. First race of Sunday, the boys 200IM and Joe Arcangelo (11) had a great start to the day, taking 4.39s off his entry time (Joe achieved 7 out 8 race pbs over the weekend, good effort, Joe!) whilst Liam Hardman, you guessed it! Finished 4th, with a new pb. Mia-Louise Pilkington (10), the only girl to join the boys on Sunday morning, made a small pb on her 50m free, confirming her time achieved at Bolton, well done. Boys 50m backstroke saw Liam Hardman finish in ………….. 4th. Last race of the morning, boys 100m freestyle, Liam Hardman, his last race of the weekend, finishing in, DRUM ROLL PLEASE ………….. 3rd!!!! A well-deserved BRONZE medal!!!! Congratulations Liam. And that wasn’t the last of the medals to be won; well done to Marlin, Isaac Brennand (12) from Bolton Metro Swim Squad, competing with his home club, who secured a pb and SILVER medal in the 200m Breaststroke. Also with a SILVER medal in the 200m Breaststroke, Callan Sharples (13). Excellent work from both of you. All in all a super weekend of racing and once again the coaches and team managers would like to thank the swimmers for their exemplary behaviour, they were a credit to the club and to their families. I’d also like to thank our swimmers’ families for supporting their childrens’ attendance at galas, which is an important and integral part of their development as competitive swimmers. The full weekend’s results can be found here:
Marvellous MarlinsSaturday 25th April, 2015, saw 40 Marlins (37 plus our 3 Preston Squad swimmers, returning to compete with their home club) and their supporting families, travel to The Jason Kenny Centre for Bolton Metro Swimming Squad’s Annual Spring Sprint Meet. With 21 clubs attending the meet, it was extremely busy poolside but a fantastic Marlins’ turn out meant our blue and white team strip dominated the top corner of poolside and was a great sight to behold. It was fantastic to see so many Marlins walking together around poolside to marshalling and some of the heats swamped with our swimmers. Even with the very difficult and cramped seating conditions, our swimmers showed great maturity and just got on with it, without complaint! They listened and followed their coaches’ instructions, organised themselves quickly and ensured they were ready for their races. Our swimmers were very helpful, particularly some of our more experienced swimmers, who offered additional support to our novice gala swimmers, this was much appreciated by their coaches. In summary our swimmers showed impeccable behaviour all day and in addition, the event organiser also commented on how clean and tidy they had left their area after the competition. A HUGE WELL DONE to you all! You made your club very proud. For over half of our swimmers, this was their very first external individual gala and probably the one they and their parents will always remember! A massive congratulations to all of these Marlins, they didn’t let the unfamiliar surroundings put them off or let their nerves get in the way, they rose to the challenge and all achieved personal best times, in many cases significantly slashing down times. What a terrific result for you all! Overall our club swimmers had a great day with 80% of races being pbs – Tremendous Work! With such excellent performances from so many of our swimmers, it’s difficult to mention everybody but two Marlins that deserve a special mention are Lauren Waddington and Jordan O’Hara, who, not only achieved pbs in all their races but also managed to medal. Lauren, at her very first gala, received a silver medal in the 9 year old 50m backstroke and Jordan O’Hara was awarded his first, external to club, Gold in 100 fly and a Silver in 50 fly in the 13 year old category. Jordan also finished 4th in his other 4 races narrowly missing out on bronze medals in each. Others finishing just outside a bronze position were Stephen Brown (13yr 50 & 100 breast) and Liam Hardman (12yr 100 free). Huge congratulations also to our Preston Squad Swimmers, Elizabeth Woodcock, Chloe Cottam and Jack Hardman, who racked up 15 pbs between them and 14 medal wins! Lizzie and Chloe dominated the 13 year old age group: Lizzie Woodcock – Gold in 200IM, 100Back, 50 free & 100 free. Silver in 50 back & 50 fly. Chloe Cottam – Gold in 100 fly, 50 back & 50 fly. Silver in 50 free & 100 free. And Jack Hardman, 15, in the difficult age category of 15&over, beat off older boys to achieve – Gold in 100 back. Silver in 200IM & 50 back. Thank you very much to the coaches poolside and to Kath Cottam and Stuart Anwyl for helping with the officiating. And also thanks to the spectating families, who braved the hot, cramped conditions to watch their swimmers perform so well. I think you’d all worked out the timing board by the time your swimmers raced?! J If any of you have any suggestions for information you would have benefited from before the gala and things that you were told about that helped you on the day, then please let me know at competitions@chorleymarlins.org.uk. I’m hoping to put together a ‘beginners’ guide to galas’ in the near future. Here’s the link to the results page: http://bmswimsquad.co.uk/results/apr2015/ I look forward to receiving entries for our in house, Chorley Marlins’ Sprint meet, Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th June. Entries will open soon………. Well done Scott Paynter for the 50m Breaststroke win
Well done Geogia Ashton for the 50m Backstroke win Well done Tom Arkwright for the 25m Fly win It was great to see the home advantage of the staggered roof causing some of the other teams problems as they tried to stay on course trying desparately to see the clipboards held up by their coaches at the end of the lane. Meanwhile the Chorley Marlins swimmers stayed on course as straight as a die. It was nice to see the Team looking smart with everyone well dressed for our home gala. Also nice to see the team morale was good, with other team members cheering on from shallow end, the three cheers at the end was a bit subdued but most people had left at that point. One comment was that some swimmers seemed to forget how to sprint backstroke, in other wernt kicking their legs. . It is a hard stroke to sprint , I struggle too, use my legs more and try to not loose the arm technique , but didn't look like some knew what to do. . ( apart from Georgia... Super swims ) Dives getting better , takeovers improving . Lovely to see so many 10 year old girls coming through . Can we find some 9 year olds ! |
