Chorley Marlins held their annual sprint meet gala on the weekend of 25th & 26th June and a number of club records were smashed.
Over the weekend a massive 26 club records were beaten and scores of personal best times were achieved by swimmers in all age categories. With over 90 of the club swimmers taking part in the gala with ages ranging from 8 to 26 it was a fantastic turn out and a chance for the swimmers who train together to race each other in a competitive environment. Times from this gala can now be used as entry qualification times for forthcoming open and team meets. For many this was the last chance to compete before Marlins take a large number of swimmers to Sheffield Ponds Forge for the Worksop gala in late August. Head Coach Mary Parkinson commented “It was as fantastic turn out for the club with a lot of club records broken at all ages. Many of the records have stood for a number of years and I am proud that our swimmers were able to perform and write themselves into the club record books” She added “A special mention should go to our youngest record breakers Elizabeth Woodcock, Rhyanna Wilson, Connor Stephens and Luka Hyam who broke 11 of the records between them in the 9 years and under category” The other new record holders and number broken are: Anna Doughty [5], Alice Jamieson [1], Mariette Braithwaite [1], Alexandra Highcock [1], Bradley Astles [1], Ben Gibbs [1], Thomas Gibbs [1] and Stephen Hancock [4]. One major highlight of the weekend was the Mini Marlins races and a chance to see future clubs swimmers, they all did fantastically well in their 25m races and we definitely have some stars for the future. They were presented their medals on the night in front of a large number of proud parents cheering their every stroke. Chorley Marlins swimming club were well represented at the British Gas ASA Regional Age Group Championships at the Ex -commonwealth 50m pool in Manchester over the first two weekends in June.
Eight Marlin swimmers battled it out against the best young swimmers in the region at the Manchester Aquatics Centre after having to achieve tough specific qualifying times at official galas. For some it was another chance to race against some old foe’s from the recent Inter-association gala in Macclesfield. Marlins swimmers took part in 39 events and qualified for 12 finals which is no mean feat at regional level. Six of the swimmers were competing at the championships for the first time and ages ranged from 10 to 14 years old. The young swimmers held their nerves to swim brilliantly in front of big crowds over two weekends in the same pool where the world’s best have competed and set records. Chorley Marlins Head Coach Mary Parkinson said “It was great for the club to produce so many swimmers able to compete at the Regional Championships. It is nerve racking for the professionals to line up on the blocks and perform at Manchester, never mind swimmers as young as 10! They rose to the challenge and did themselves and the club proud” The swimmers competing were Megan Ireland [10], Alexandra Highcock [10] Stephen Hancock [10], Anna Doughty [12], Jack Dandy [12], James Highcock [13], Emily Barclay [13] and Thomas Gibbs [14]. “As a club we are proud to see swimmers who have developed through our squad structure from an early age progress to compete at this level. All our swimmers swam fantastically well and a highlight was to see Emily, Thomas, Anna and Stephen qualify for the finals, especially as for some it was their first Regional Championships!” the head coach added. Emily Barclay and Thomas Gibbs have also achieved National Qualifying Times and will now go on to compete at the ASA National Championships in July at Ponds Forge, Sheffield. A record number of Chorley Marlins swimmers represented in the winning North Lancashire swimming team in the Inter Association Gala last weekend. The Inter Association Gala is a regional gala with district teams submitted from North Lancashire, Central Lancashire, North Midlands, Liverpool, Bolton and Manchester and Cumbria. With points awarded for higher placed finishes, North Lancashire [624 pts] held off a stiff competition from Liverpool and District [607 pts] and Cumbria [564.5 pts] to emerge victorious The 7 Marlins swimmers competed in Macclesfield and between them represented North Lancashire in 23 events achieving 9 podium finishes for the team and collecting a large number of team points and personal best times. This is Chorley Marlins best showing at the Inter Association gala, where the team is selected based on the North Lancs district gala at Blackpool Palatine pool in January/ February. Chorley Marlins Head Coach Mary Parkinson commented “We are delighted that so many of our swimmers were selected for the team, it shows a reward for the hard work by the swimmers and coaching team and has given the whole club a lift. Our aim now is to try and build on this to ensure more swimmers from the club put themselves into contention for selection next year” The head coach added “This result follows on from other recent successful team performances in the North West Micro League team competition where we currently leading the division with 1 gala remaining and some fantastic individual swims at the recent Lancashire County Championships and Wrexham Spring Meets where an impressive 30 medals were won at all ages” The swimmers competing were Emily Barcley [13], Anna Doughty [12], Alexandra Highcock [10], Tom Gibbs [13], James Highcock [13], Jack Dandy [12] and Stephen Hancock [10].
